annual-sympo-2

The 9th Annual NBRO Symposium on “Innovation for Build Back Better” will be organized on 18th and 19th December 2018 at Galle Face Hotel, Colombo as a tradition to propagate the outcome of NBRO’s Research & Development and other related studies, with a special focuson a people - centered approach to Disaster Risk Reduction activities in Sri Lanka.

The “Build Back Better” approach first gained global attention during the re-construction of Aceh, Indonesia following the 2004 Great Earthquake of the coast of Sumatra and the subsequent tsunami in the Indian Ocean. The Global Platform on Disaster Risk Reduction and the World Reconstruction Conference 1 and 2 have consolidated the experiences and given a high profile to the concept of build back better. The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 – 2030 was adopted at the Third United Nations World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction which notes that the recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction phase is a critical opportunity for “Build Back Better”.

The key note speech will be delivered by Dr. Farrokh Nadim, Technical Director of Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) on theme of “Managing landslide and other natural hazard risks: Lessons from the European Safe Land Project”. His major fields of work related to risk and reliability analysis, geohazards (landslide, earthquake and tsunamis) geotechnical earthquake engineering, and offshore foundation engineering.

The thematic area addressed by the two-day symposium will be the following:

    • Emerging technologies for safer built environment
    • Recovery, rehabilitation & reconstruction
    • Innovations for sustainable building materials
    • Engineering approaches for resilience
    • Environmental adaptation for sustainable community
    • Preparedness for effective response

This year symposium has been arranged with the cooperation of local and international stakeholder institutions who collaborate with NBRO in disaster risk reduction endeavors in Sri Lanka, and this symposium would provide path ways to incorporate disaster resilience into post-disaster recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction process.
