10th Annual Research Symposium of NBRO

“Disaster Risk is mainly associated with human activities which should be protected from disasters. Human activities can be justified by housing, settlements, land use, etc. the resources which are going to be allocated to reduce the risk on human activities by increasing resilience. Risk reduction should be done by allocation of resources equitably, and not equally.” With having the understanding on above, 10th Annual Research Symposium of National Building Research Organization (NBRO) which themed on “Equitable Resilience’’ was held at the Hotel Galadari, Colombo on 17th and 18th December 2019.

Major Gen. Kamal Gunaratne (Retd), Secretary to the Ministry of Defence participated as the chief guest of this event and Her Excellency Trine Jøranli Eskedal, the Ambassador, Royal Norwegian Embassy, Colombo was guest of honor for this year research symposium.

“The resilience-based sustainable development must be comprehensive in nature, and it requires integrated responses to complex challenges and respect for national ownership and leadership. NBRO has tremendously worked in disaster mitigation while introducing guidelines and provide guidance through its research and innovations” said Maj.Gen. Gunaratne while addressing the gathering.

The Keynote speech on ‘Technology Enhanced Adaptive Governance to Support Equitable Resilience’ was delivered by the Prof. Terrence Fernando, Director of the THINKlab, School of Science, Engineering & Environment, University of Salford, UK.

The symposium was included several panel discussions which the industry experts, eminent professionals and academics contributed their experiences and views on the subject areas. The works carried out in the recent past on NBRO’s main objectives of Landslide Risk Reduction and Building Research were presented in the Technical Sessions.

This year’s symposium was arranged with the cooperation of local and international stakeholder institutions who collaborate with NBRO in disaster risk reduction endeavors in Sri Lanka.
