Geotechnical Engineering Division (GED) carry out consultancy in the fields of soil mechanics, engineering geology, foundation designs, landslide mitigations and research which have a direct relevance to local need. The GED also provides geotechnical services to the construction sector. Areas that need further research and development are often identified in the process of providing such services to the Construction Industry.

As a leading firm of geotechnical services, we so far contributed its valuable services to major development projects combined with principle governmental authorities and non-governmental firms in Sri Lanka for nearly 30 years. We are composed of well experienced team of geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists, scientists, drilling supervisors, drilling operators, drillers and skilled helpers. Also it possess modern and sophisticated equipment to perform geotechnical and geophysical investigations and analysis works in offshore as well as on shore.

GED also afford laboratory facilities for soil testing with international standards and is having its own panel of expertise to carry out testing.

Following projects may give you a brief overview about us

We have contributed our geotechnical service to the recent mega transportation project combined with Ministry of Ports and Highways, Road Development Authority for Borehole investigations along extension of southern highway from godagama to andarawewa, alternative trace from 0.00km to 13.00km, section ii - from 5.375km to 8.700km

Landslide Disaster Protection Project (LDPP) of the national road network was undertaken by Ministry of Ports and Highways, Sri Lanka with the financial and technical corporation from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Execution of the LDPP is carried out by Road Development Authority (RDA). The technical consultancies and expert assistance for the project is provided by Oriental Consultants Co, Ltd.

Accordingly, National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has been selected by LDPP Consultants JV as a qualified sub consultant to execute the main investigation including drilling, laboratory tests, geophysical explorations (seismic exploration and high density electric sounding), installation of monitoring instruments (extensometers, pipe strain gauges, borehole inclinometers and groundwater level gauges) and execute the monitoring program as well.

We carry out the consultancy in the field of soil nailing where a recent project was completed at Diyathalawa bus stand

Landslides in mountainous regions sometimes cause heavy casualties and economic losses. In order to mitigate landslide hazard effectively, GED introduced Horizontal Gravity Drains (HGD) at the Punchi Raththota, garadi ella and kokmaduwa landslides. Horizontal Gravity Drains are used to lower the ground water table in a landslide or in an unstable slope.

GED also involve with the landslide mitigation projects combined with the Landslide research and risk management division of NBRO to mitigate the identified landslide risk areas from government grants for the vulnerable communities in country such as Wavegama hospital, kottagaharawa, kurukudegama, pinnawala, pinnarawa, gampola etc.

According to the information furnished by the Client, it is intended to construct a thirty two storeyed building with two basements for proposed secretariat building for employee’s provident fund. Our engineering expertise has given the consultancies rely on the geotechnical investigations for Subsurface conditions at the site including soil profile and description, Recommendations for suitable foundation  types, including appropriate design parameters, Anticipated settlements for the proposed foundation types etc.
